How to Play

To Boldly Go is a strategy game about commanding humanity's first interstellar exploration vessel. You'll navigate the galaxy, manage your crew, explore alien worlds, and deal with whatever you find, through diplomacy or force.

The Three Layers

The game moves between three interconnected views:

Galaxy Map, Plot courses between real-named star systems (Sol, Tau Ceti, Barnard's Star...). Time passes as you travel, fuel depletes, and encounters may interrupt your journey. Use the warp speed controls and time buttons at the bottom of the screen to manage your pace.

Ship Interior, Your ship has six sections you can click into: Bridge, Engineering, Medical, Habitation, Warehouse, and Shuttle Bay. Manage crew assignments from the Habitation roster, check ship status from the Captain's Chair, or deploy away teams from the Shuttle Bay.

Planetside, Land on planets, moons, and stations with an away team of up to 4 crew. Explore a hex grid, reveal fog of war, scan and interact with Points of Interest, and keep an eye on the escalation meter.

Exploration & Escalation

When planetside, a threat bar at the top of the screen tracks escalation. It rises over time and as you interact with the environment. Bringing a Diplomat on your team helps keep it down. If escalation hits Critical, combat triggers automatically. If it hits 100%, your team is evacuated.

Choose your away team carefully, crew roles matter:

  • Scouts reveal more of the map
  • Scientists can perform area scans and interact with certain discoveries
  • Diplomats passively reduce escalation
  • Medics can revive downed allies in combat
  • Tacticals are your best fighters

Combat

Combat is turn-based on the same hex grid. Each crew member gets one move and one action per turn (Attack, Negotiate, or Stabilize). Enemies then take their turn.

  • Attack, Ranged fire with hit chance based on accuracy and distance
  • Negotiate (Diplomat only), Attempt to end combat peacefully
  • Stabilize (Medic only), Revive a downed adjacent ally

Downed crew have 3 turns before they're lost for good. Combat results affect XP, morale, and crew status, victories let you continue exploring, while defeat sends you back to the ship.

Tips for New Players

  • Scan before you interact. Scanning a POI costs less escalation than interacting blind.
  • Bring a Diplomat. Their passive escalation reduction gives you significantly more time to explore.
  • Watch your fuel. You can't plot a course if you can't afford the trip.
  • Stay near your shuttle. Units near the landing zone benefit from reduced escalation.
  • Crew composition matters. A balanced team (combat + support) handles surprises better than four soldiers.
